In a word, this story is danger。 From the very beginning, the stakes are incredibly high, and they manage to stay high the entire time。 An original world with a unique magic system and a steamy romance subplot。

The romance was so raw and annoying and fast-to-approach in this one。 I kept rolling my eyes at those sections。The story itself wasn't that new and great, but boy did I love the writing style? Now I am famished to have more of that style。Reading this book (despite the weird romance) felt like reading a very very experienced author's。 You immediately start to enjoy how perfectly well the sentences are fitting in。 How she has poured so much thoughts into this。 To make it witty。 The deduction within the book? Oh man don't even let me get started。All in all, as much as a great writing style it had, I did not enjoy the story itself nor did I enjoy the Romance。And I hated that the main character had so many self-worth issues。 Her love interest kept telling her "I know you can't resist me so just give up to me" and she also knew she couldn't resist him and she felt like she is responsible to satisfy someone elese's needs with her own body (it would have helped if at least there was some love between them!)So。。。Say, somewhere between 3。5 to 4 stars :) 。。。more

Really enjoyed this! This was my first book by this author after hearing so many good things。 My roommate read the Broken Earth series and loved it and I was super intrigued by The City We Became but never ended up getting to it so I'm so glad I finally picked up a book by this author。 This is a book that sort of defies summary because so much of this was unexpected to me and I don't want to spoil things but the political intrigue in all of this is so good。 I say that I like political intrigue i Really enjoyed this! Everything to do with the Gods and their connection to thr Arameri family was so interesting to me。 That element was probably my favorite part of this book。 Seeing the way Yeine interacted with the Gods vs how everyone else did was very interesting to read and really kept me engaged with the story as a whole。 The character work combined with the world building was phenomenal and really want to read the next book in this series。 。。。more

3。5 Stars…This didn’t blow me away the way I wanted it to after having read The City We Became, but knowingthis was NK Jemisin’s first novel, I’m a little more inclined to not be as judgmental。 I had thought this was a younger YA story by the writing so the sexual content caught me off guard。 But the political intrigue and religious structure kept me interested。 I will definitely continue with the series。

Love the world! Not sure how the rest of the series is going to play out or if I'm going to want to read it, but I enjoyed the main character, Yeine。 Mainly her sarcasm and that she was very no nonsense; she stood up to everyone and made her thoughts known。 Sieh was also a favorite and I'm kind of excited that the last book is from his perspective。 I found Nahadoth to be intriguing, however thought that the relationship between him and Yeine was not properly explored or explained well。 It seems Love the world! 3。5 stars。 I love how unique N。K。 Jemisin’s fantasy stories are。 I enjoyed the story and the characters, but I was thrown off by how YA the narration felt。 The main character/narrator is 19, but she’s also the leader of a matriarchal warrior society, and she sounds so immature。 The dialogue was also pretty lacking。 So those issues surprised me, having read the very well done Broken Earth trilogy。

This was a fun book to read。 It started with a contest to be the ruler and then took some strange turns with gods who align with some of the player。 I enjoyed it and even though the end was predictable I found it took a nice twist on a common troupe。 I will be looking forward to continuing the series。 The main character was a little crazy and not entirely trustworthy so I sometimes wondered if what she was experiencing was true or something that was not quite reality。 Although, it was her realit This was a fun book to read。 It started with a contest to be the ruler and then took some strange turns with gods who align with some of the player。 I enjoyed it and even though the end was predictable I found it took a nice twist on a common troupe。 I will be looking forward to continuing the series。 The main character was a little crazy and not entirely trustworthy so I sometimes wondered if what she was experiencing was true or something that was not quite reality。 Although, it was her reality。 It was interesting to have a child god who what not truly a child at least age wise but because he was a child god he has the disposition of a child。 Great book the author has great prose and a good story。 。。。more

Jemisin is fast becoming one of my favorite authors! Original and a fresh take on the whole Gods theme, I was hooked from page one。 Because I listened to this on audio I might have missed a few gems, so I'll definitely be revisiting the physical book soon。 Jemisin is fast becoming one of my favorite authors! Into it! Loved it。 Instantly hooked and mesmerized by the main character。 Enjoyed her personality and interaction with the gods。 Appreciated the romance。 The diversity。 Liked the build up and was curious how it would play out but never sure until it happened。 Satisfying ending but excited for what’s next。 Devoured book。

The world that Jemisin creates is unique。 Nice to have an original fantasy novel without a romance at the center。 Jemisin takes her time building this world and developing each character。 Because of this the book moves slowly。 It is hard to connect with the story and keep track of all of the characters and how they relate to one another。 I felt like I needed a character map to follow along。 I hope future books would be more engaging since the first book so throughly established the world and all The world that Jemisin creates is unique。 Nice to have an original fantasy novel without a romance at the center。 Jemisin takes her time building this world and developing each character。 Because of this the book moves slowly。 It is hard to connect with the story and keep track of all of the characters and how they relate to one another。 I felt like I needed a character map to follow along。 I hope future books would be more engaging since the first book so throughly established the world and all the characters。 I’d read the second book in the series。 。。。more

I really liked this book。 It was dense, but so worth it to stick it out and get to the end。 I was pleasantly surprised at lots of points throughout the book。 She takes the ideas we have about ruling and who does/should control kingdoms, and she turns it on its head。 We follow along with Yeine as she discovers who she really is and learns more about her parent's past。 We're learning about the court in the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms the same time she does, and it's so well done that you don't even I really liked this book。 It was dense, but so worth it to stick it out and get to the end。 I was pleasantly surprised at lots of points throughout the book。 She takes the ideas we have about ruling and who does/should control kingdoms, and she turns it on its head。 We follow along with Yeine as she discovers who she really is and learns more about her parent's past。 We're learning about the court in the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms the same time she does, and it's so well done that you don't even know you're being "taught" about the world。 I am excited to finish this trilogy, and really interested to see where she goes from the ending of book one! Took a while to sort out why the writing seemed so。。。disjointed and clunky but once it made sense it was smooth reading。 Interesting read and will continue on with the series to see what becomes of the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms and the gods。

After the death of her mother, Yeine is summoned to Sky by her grandfather where she discovers she’s an heir to the throne but there’s a couple of other heirs vying for the throne too and it gets deliciously political very fast。 And that is all you should know going into it。 I’m so glad I didn’t know anything else because this book is just so full and because our main character doesn’t know much of what’s going on it’s nice going into it also not knowing very much。 The plot itself started off ve After the death of her mother, Yeine is summoned to Sky by her grandfather where she discovers she’s an heir to the throne but there’s a couple of other heirs vying for the throne too and it gets deliciously political very fast。 And that is all you should know going into it。 I’m so glad I didn’t know anything else because this book is just so full and because our main character doesn’t know much of what’s going on it’s nice going into it also not knowing very much。 The plot itself started off very standard and nothing special but it has a definite spin to it that has N。K。 Jemisin’s signature flair of darker themes。 I thought the worldbuilding is so rich and realistic and is the best part of this book to me, I absolutely loved learning everything about this world。 We’re slowly given information instead of receiving large info dumps and normally that would cause a lot of confusion but because of how masterfully N。K。 Jemisin writes coupled with the mostly first person perspective of our main character, this ended up adding so much to the atmosphere of the book。 She has no idea what’s going on because she wasn’t raised in this city or around any of this family, it opens up with Yeine not even knowing she’s an heir so she’s at the mercy of everyone who grew up in the know telling her the history of not only the city and the family but also the relationship with the Gods。 All of the characters feel so real, even ones we only really see once in a while who don’t initially appear like there’s very much to them。 They’re all so fleshed out and have very thorough motivations, we have two major plotlines happening at the same time and they compliment each other so well while also having the characters react perfectly to everything all at once。 I don’t think I would have enjoyed this as much if this was my first introduction to Jemisin’s work so if you’re thinking of checking her out I would start with The Fifth Season。 The themes are the same but I think she became a better writer and handled things with more care in her later works。 I can see why this could possibly be a polarizing book because it gets a little bit weird and ambitious at points but just trust the process。 Potential spoilers and content warningsThere’s a couple of potential content warnings but it’s a bit odd because the characters involved are Gods so I’m not really sure how to feel about that。 The Gods are siblings and also kind of each other’s parents so there’s incest, and there’s also a God who presents physically as a child (but can also appear as an adult) and their favourite persona is childlike and there’s reference to him having sex with adults and also sexual abuse。 It’s a bit complex but the vibes are there for sure。 。。。more

Wow! This book is nothing at all what I thought it would be。 This was a fantasy political thriller filled with gods, magic, love, and family。 I’m very curious to see where this goes as this the first of a trilogy! I discovered N。 K。 Jemisin through her Far Sector comic and now I can’t wait to dive further into her bibliography!

Jemisin is great。 This is an earlier work of hers and you can see her style and themes already emerging - it’s very rich, intense, detailed both in its descriptions and its internal emotional states, exploring issues of power and identity and the tricky nature of interpersonal relationships。 Will definitely seek out the later books in this series。
